Amazon Rainforest - The Largest Tropical Rainforest in the World

The Amazon Rainforest is the largest tropical rainforest in the world. It is a moist broad-leaf forest that covers most of the Amazon Basin of South America. The Amazon Rainforest is the world's greatest natural resource - the most powerful and bio-actively diverse natural phenomenon on the planet.

Amazon Rainforest covers over 500,000 square kilometers of land and makes it the largest of all rainforests on earth. It extends over nine individual countries in South America. The vast region of Amazon Rainforest spans across Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana. Over half of the world's largest rainforest is located in Brazil.

Within this vast amount of land lives the animals and plants that make the area so beautiful. It supports millions of plant, animal and insect species. 10% of the world's known species live in the Amazon Rainforest. It is home to around 2.5 million insect species, 2000 animal species and over 40000 plant species. 20% of the world's bird species live in the Amazon Rainforest. There are also a number of dangerous species living in the Amazon rainforest such as the cougar, jaguar and anaconda.

The landscape of Amazon Rainforest contains 1.4 billion acres of dense forests, half of the planet's remaining tropical forests. It also contains 4,100 miles of winding rivers, 2.6 million square miles in the Amazon basin, about 40 percent of South America.

The Amazon Rainforest has long been a symbol of mystery and power, a sacred link between humans and nature. There is a clear link between the health of the Amazon and the health of the planet. The rain forests, which contain 90-140 billion metric tons of carbon, help stabilize local and global climate.

The Amazon Rainforest is the richest biological incubator on the planet. It is also a virtual library of chemical invention. In these archives, drugs like quinine, muscle relaxants, steroids and cancer drugs are found.
