Serengeti National Park - Tanzania's Most Popular National Park

The Serengeti is a geographical area located in northern Tanzania and extends to south-western Kenya. The Serengeti ecosystem is one of the oldest on earth and is famous for its annual migration. Spanning an area of over 30,000 square kilometers, the Serengeti hosts the largest terrestrial mammal migration in the world. Over one million white bearded wildebeest, 200,000 zebra and 300,000 Thomson's gazelle flow south from the northern hills to the southern plains for the short rains every October and November.

With hundreds of individual animal species crossing the Serengeti every year, the migration of the wildebeests, zebras and buffaloes is one of the most wonderful sights of nature in the world. Yet even when the migration is quiet, the Serengeti offers arguably the most scintillating game-viewing in Africa: great herds of buffalo, smaller groups of elephant and giraffe, and thousands upon thousands of eland, topi, kongoni, impala and Grant’s gazelle.

The Serengeti is regarded as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa. It is also one of the ten natural travel wonders of the world. The area is home to approximately 70 larger mammal species including blue wildebeests, gazelles, zebras and buffaloes. The Serengeti is also renowned for its large lion population and is one of the best places to observe prides in their natural environment.

The Serengeti region encompasses the Serengeti National Park itself, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Maswa Game Reserve, the Loliondo, Grumeti and Ikorongo Controlled Areas and the Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya. Two World Heritage Sites and two Biosphere Reserves have been established within the 30,000 square kilometers region.

The Serengeti National Park is Tanzania's oldest and most popular national park and is also a world heritage site. It remains the flagship of the country's tourism industry, providing a major draw to the Northern Safari Circuit. The Serengeti National Park covers 14,763 square kilometers of grassland plains and savanna as well as riverine forest and woodlands. Over 90,000 tourists visit the Park each year.
