Aogashima - A Beautiful Volcanic Island in Japan

Located approximately 358 kilometers south of Tokyo, Aogashima is a small volcanic island in the Philippine Sea. This beautiful tropical volcanic island is the southernmost island of the Izu archipelago in Japan. The island of Aogashima itself is a giant volcanic crater. And withing this crater there is another smaller volcano.

Aogashima is considered an active volcano but that doesn't keep people away from this beautiful island. It has been inhabited for many years and is the most isolated inhabited island of the Izu archipelago. The last eruption of the volcano which occurred back in 1780s killed nearly half of the island's population and forced the others to flee. However, it took just fifty years for the people to return. Today, the island is inhabited by more than 200 people.

The island is within the boundaries of the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park and the village of Aogashima administers the island under Tokyo Metropolis. There is a school, a local post office, local bars and couple of restaurants in the island. It is just like any other small town with a small port of its own.
