Colorful Bangla New Year Celebration in Bangladesh
Bangladesh celebrates the Pohela Boishakh, the first day of the Bangla New Year, with colorful festivities. It is the first day of the first Bangla month Boishakh and occurs on 14th April. It is a day of collective celebration in Bangladesh and has become an integral part of the Bengali cultural heritage and tradition over the years.
Pohela Boishakh, the first day of the Bangla New Year, is marked with singing, processions and fairs throughout the country. The celebration begins at dawn at Romna Botomul where musicians of Chayanot, a leading cultural organization, plays songs with traditional dances. The day is celebrated with much pomp and fanfare. On the occasion of the Bangla New Year, the entire country gets into a festive mood.

Bengali women get dressed in traditional saris with their hair all bedecked in flowers while men wear traditional Panjabis. A huge colorful procession is organized by the students and teachers of Institute of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka. The procession is called Mongol Shovajatra and all sorts of people in Dhaka take part in the procession. Tens of thousands of people wearing masks and traditional dresses join the colorful procession to welcome the new year with good spirits.
